Biden Quote

“It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. We’re about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America. Remember I said it standing here if you don’t remember anything else I said. Watch, we’re gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy…I guarantee you, it’s gonna happen.”
—Joe Biden, 10/20/2008
Imagine what the media would say if Sarah Palin said, "If McCain's elected, just wait and see the types of terrorist attacks hit the United States." Yea, she'd be lambasted by the media. Biden effectively says the same thing, nothing. The American people deserve to know that Joe Biden thinks we're going to get attacked if Obama is elected President. The should know that his own running mate thinks that Obama may be a liability to our nation as an international crisis will happen if he's elected because our enemies will want "...to test his mettle..." as opposed to if John McCain is elected where he's unsure if it'll happen. I suppose this means that Joe Biden thinks that our enemies already understand the caliber of man that John McCain is and know how he'll respond to them whereas Obama is an untested entity that they're unsure about. I think that in and of itself says it all...

Call me skeptical, but I'm not ready to take Joe Biden's comment at face value. If Sarah Palin said something like that, I would probably arch my eyebrow and ridicule her, like I do with much of what she says already. It's a deranged and somewhat ludicrous proposition, designed for spin more than serious discussion.

But if we forget about that, this is still a terrible criteria for evaluating a candidate. If Al Qaeda or some other terrorist group came out and said "If you elect this person president, we're going to attack you", are we then to vote for somebody else on the grounds that by doing so we reduce the likelihood of an attempted attack?

Now obviously there's a difference between a group explicitly trying to manipulate us and Joe Biden saying this, but there's a useful analogy to be drawn here, in that we cannot let the intentions of our enemies guide our hand in evaluating who should be our president. The likelihood of an attempt should be a non-issue. It is exponentially more important how a chief executive would handle intelligence and operations related to such attacks, because they are possible no matter who is president. Our enemies aren't going to magically disappear or decide to run away from us because of John McCain.

Use it as a segue to talk about security policy if you must, but that opinion is not reflective of a candidate on its own.

The truth is that every President for as far back as I can remember has had some sort of crisis with varying degrees of severity depending on the President when they got into office. It wasn't done to "test their mettle" it just happened because the world isn't a static place that's ready to wait for you to get acclimated to the office.

My bigger point was that Biden speaks as though he thinks Obama needs to prove his mettle and that this international crisis will help that to happen. I don't think McCain needs to. I already know what kind of man he is and how he'll react to a crisis. Domestic, he'll need some good advisors but in the end will make a solid decision based on his instincts and the advice of others. Note the latter part, because our current President doesn't always do that. International crisis? I'm confident in his abilities to lead us through. That's the analogy I intended to draw.

I don't necessarily think Biden assumes our enemies will attack us of Obama is elected. I mostly just think Biden is a bad speaker who commonly picks the worst choice of words to say.
