On Governor Palin and Rape Kits

The myth that Sarah Palin as Mayor of Wasilla tried to charge victims for rape kits is false. Slate's XX Factor and Confederate Yankee take on the myth in full force with detailed analyses about the accusation. Where did the rumor start? An article from Frontiersman, a paper that covers Wasilla. The police chief of Wasilla said that the new legislation would prevent them from charging insurance companies for the cost of the kits, which they've done in the past and that he felt, "Ultimately it is the criminal who should bear the burden of the added costs...[t]he forensic exam is just one part of the equation. Id like to see the courts make these people pay restitution for these things..." According to records in Wasilla, no sexual assault victim had ever been charged for these kits. Read the two articles above and I hope that it helps put to rest this rumor.

That she specifically tried to charge them is false. That the city, under her, with her authorization, stopped paying for them, effectively forcing victims to pay part or all of the cost for them, is true.
