2010 GOP Hopefuls: Marco Rubio

Marco Rubio is the 39 year old former Florida Speaker of the House and a Republican US Senate candidate.

Born of two Cuban immigrants, Rubio worked his way up from his local community college to graduate from the University of Florida in 1993. Rubio graduated cum laude from the University of Miami in 1996 with his J.D.

Rubio first held elected office as a City Commissioner for West Miami and in 2000, began to serve in the Florida House of Representatives. During his tenure, Americans for Tax Reform referred to Rubio as “...the most pro-taxpayer legislative leader in the country." In 2005 and 2006, Rubio traveled the state hosting what he called "Idearaisers." The point of these events was to generated ideas on how to make a better state for their State. He then compiled the top 100 ideas into a book entitled 100 Innovative Ideas for Florida’s Future. These ideas became the centerpiece to the remainder of his tenure. In 2007, Rubio was selected as the Speaker of the House and during this time, fostered the accomplishment of 50 of the 100 ideas from his statewide tour.

In 2008, Rubio left office due to term limits. Since leaving public office, Rubio returned to practicing law in West Miami. He also served as a visiting professor at Florida International University’s Metropolitan Center, worked as Florida Chairman of GOPAC, and served as a political analyst for Univision during the 2008 Presidential election.

In May 2009, Rubio announced that he was running for US Senate to replace outgoing Senator Mel Martinez. He was ready to serve his State and not willing to wait in the wings while other potential candidates made up their mind. Since then, Governor Charlie Crist has also announced that he will be running for US Senate. Rubio remains unwavering in his bid for office. He is young, optimistic, and full of ideas. He brings with him good experience for the role and has a solid, conservative record. He is the underdog in this primary, but if recent history is any indicator - underdogs can and do win in primaries.
Marco Rubio is exactly the type of candidate that the national Republican Party should be seeking out. He is an experienced, energetic, younger Republican with roots outside of traditional Republican circles who is steadfast in his principles and can articulate them well.
